Skiing Training & Conditioning

What is involved in Skiing?

We’ve chosen to divide our ski pages into two areas. The first category includes downhill skiing and snowboarding, and traditionally involves going up on ski lifts or via helicopter (known as heli-skiing). This category requires a moderate base of cardiovascular conditioning, a high level of skill and experience, and a high degree of leg strength and muscular endurance. The second involves back-country travel, and includes cross-country, rondonee, telemark and alpine skiing, as well as snowshoeing. Frequently, alpine enthusiasts who choose to travel in the back-country will carry their boards or ski up using skins for the ascent, and then enjoy the long run down; two such examples would be Mt. St. Helens in early season, and Mt. Rainier from Camp Muir in clear conditions. Alpine skiing requires a high level of cardiovascular conditioning, training in and awareness of avalanche safety, and moderate full body muscular endurance.
