Examples of challenges that our clients face when preparing for their trip.

kneepain

Challenge – Knee pain

Sue lived in Seattle with regular access to mountains for training. She wanted to prepare for Denali as a member of an all-women team. Her main obstacle included strengthening her knees following surgery. We created a program that focused on the following elements:
  1. Including targeted knee-strengthening movements including the reverse step up;
  2. Gradually increasing her pack weight and hiking distances so that her knees could adapt to the training without recurring pain;
  3. Strengthening the entire body to tolerate pulling a sled and carrying gear to base camp totaling 130 pounds;
  4. Incorporating back-to-backs with her teammates in winter on Rainier to simulate challenges they’d experience on Denali.
Not only did she admit that she loved the exercises she learned from us and how invincible they made her feel, but the other trainers at her gym were also curious about the unique movements. Through proper training and recovery, Sue overcame her knee pain, and her whole team successfully reached the summit.

flat land

Challenge – Lived in a flat area and only training was running

Al was preparing to climb Aconcagua and lived in Texas where there was no hills or maintains to train on. He had trained for half marathons, but he wanted to be sure he was ready for the rigors of carrying a pack for days at altitude. We developed a program that focused on three elements:
  1. Adding uphill programming on a stair climber, incline treadmill, and elliptical machines;
  2. Including sprints and anaerobic interval training for the effects of altitude;
  3. Creating a free-weight strength training program to prepare for the rigors of carrying 50 pounds at high altitude.
Not only did Al successfully reach the summit, but he later shared that he felt extremely well-prepared to tackle every challenge he faced. He also felt he was one of the strongest members of the team, and it was extremely gratifying to see all of his hard work pay off in real time.

novice

Challenge – Complete novice

Merry lived in the Midwest with plenty of hiking trails but not a lot of elevation gain. She loved riding horses and often followed exercise videos. She knew she had to be better prepared to climb Kilimanjaro, but she wasn’t sure whether she was doing the right things. She also had lots of questions about what it would be like to climb a big mountain.

Her program focused on the following elements:
  1. Increased hiking distances with as much varied terrain as she could find for the smaller support muscles in her ankles, knees, and hips;
  2. Adding leg and core strength exercises specific to mountaineering to supplement her apps;
  3. Incorporating weekly stair climbing and interval training to prepare for altitude;
  4. Allotting time in her sessions to answer her questions about the climb itself.
She had a wonderful Africa adventure and successfully reached the summit. The trip exceeded her expectations. Her biggest takeaway was just how “mental” climbing a big mountain was.

What previous Alpine Ascents clients are saying

Mary Anne on Kilimanjaro

"What a great experience. Big takeaway - you have to be prepared, and we were. And you were so right - the summit is very 'mental.' Thank you so much. The trip exceeded all our expectations!"

Kathy on the Denali Summit

"I started my climb of Denali with Alpine Ascents International. There were 6 clients and I was by far the oldest in the group. I am 48 and the average age was 29. I did not let this intimidate me because I had trained with Body Results and my pre-existing knee problems that precluded an attempt at this trip in 2007 were never an issue on this trip. It was a special experience to have been on the mountain with so few people. I felt really strong the whole trip and this was thanks to my conditioning using training developed through Body Results."

- Kathy on Denali Summit
  ★★★★★

Adam on Mt Everest Summit

"Over the 16 months we worked together I summited Denali, Baruntse, and Everest. What began as a more general fitness program to build up my strength and endurance quickly evolved into an organic, customizable program that I believe was key in my preparation for each adventure. Every trip required something different - strength, fitness, pack weight, pulling a sled, altitude, etc. Your knowledge of the climbs and ability to create exercises to focus on the appropriate areas was on-target. In speaking with other climbers, it was clear that I had done more work (and better work) on the front-end by following your training programs. I think the best compliment I can give is to say that at the beginning of every climb when there are so many unknowns, being fit, strong, and well-trained were never concerns of mine."
