Mt Kilimanjaro

Elevation: 19,340 ft (5,895m)
Location: Tanzania, Africa

Mt. Kilimanjaro 2001

Mt. Kilimanjaro, a dormant volcano, is the highest mountain in Africa and is often done as a first non-technical high altitude peak in preparation for trips up the other Seven Summits. It towers 15,000 feet above the surrounding arid plains, and 2.5 square miles of its surface are over 18,500 feet. Beneath its ice dome, snow extends down long gullies that have been eroded in the mountainís sides. It has several popular trekking routes, as well as the Western Breach (a scrambling route) and other more remote and technical routes to the summit.

Routes & Skills

The main routes require 13,000 feet of elevation gain over terrain ranging from dirt trails to rocky moonscapes to icy glaciers near its summit. Trips are typically 5-7 days long, although likelihood of success is greater on a 6- or 7-day trip. Guides and porters are required and help support the local economy. While technical gear is not required, general mountaineering experience is recommended.

Physical Requirements

All routes on Kilimanjaro require 13-15,000 feet of elevation gain while carrying a light day pack up to 15-20 pounds. Trips require substantial cardiovascular stamina and strength endurance in the muscles of the legs, core, and upper back/shoulders, as well as capability of sustained steady exertion at high altitudes.
