ADRENALINE
By C. Schurman 2/2000
First appeared in Cliff Notes I:1

On either side of a treacherous snowbridge
Into the bottomless crevasse—
A precipitous drop
Knees quivering
Heart pounding
Crampons slip
Over solid ice
“FALLING!”
not me
NO!
Dig in
Ice axe
In self-arrest—
Pray the ropes hold.
Now babysteps
Forward
Again
Inch
By
Inch
Until the
Other side is
Within leaping
Distance, steady –
And collapse in soft snow bank
Safe at last, to return down the mountain alive.
