Rock Climbing Training & Conditioning

What is involved in Rock Climbing?

Rock climbing can be done outside on rock or inside on artificial rock walls. Rock climbing outside typically involves climbing up predefined "routes". Some of the routes have clips "bolted" to the rock so the lead climber can easily "protect" himself from a long fall. Other routes require the lead climber to place odd-shaped items or camming devices in a secure way to hold a fall. This is referred to as traditional or "trad" climbing. Rock climbing requires a great deal of skill and technique. Strength is no substitute for technique but can assist in improving climbing ability. Sometimes the goal of the climber is to find an area to climb for the pure pleasure of climbing; at other times, the goal is to climb a peak where the route to the summit involves climbing rock pitches, what is referred to as alpine climbing.
